🇳🇱 "But I don't speak Dutch..." Career Myth vs. Reality

One of the most common things I hear from internationals is: "I’m not getting hired because my Dutch isn't good enough." While speaking the local language is always an advantage, the idea that it’s an absolute requirement for a high-level career in the Netherlands is one of the biggest myths in the market.
Let’s separate the Myths from the Reality:
Myth 1: You need Dutch to work in a Dutch company.
✅ Reality: The Netherlands is home to thousands of International Corporates, Scale-ups, and Tech hubs where the "Floor Language" is English. Companies like Booking.com, ASML, and Nike operate almost entirely in English. They aren't looking for a Dutch speaker; they are looking for a Specialist.
Myth 2: "English-only" roles are only in IT or Tech.
✅ Reality: While Tech is English-dominant, there is a massive demand for English speakers in Logistics, Marketing, HR, Finance, and Supply Chain. The key isn't your industry; it’s the client base of the company. If they serve global markets, they need global talent.
Myth 3: If a job description is in Dutch, I shouldn't apply.
✅ Reality: (Mostly) true, but with a twist. If a company posts in Dutch, they usually want Dutch. However, if you find a role that fits you perfectly, reaching out to the recruiter in English to ask about the language requirement can sometimes reveal that they are open to internationals but simply used a standard template.

The Real Challenge: It’s not the Language, it’s the Strategy.
If you aren’t speaking Dutch, you are competing in a highly saturated "Door" market (the public job boards). This is where the "Window Method" becomes your best friend.
When you don't speak the language, your Network and your Niche become your strongest currencies.
The Niche: You need to position yourself as an expert in a specific problem (e.g., "Scaling B2B SaaS" or "International Tax Law") so that the value you bring far outweighs the language gap.
The Network: 70% of roles are in the "Hidden Market." In this space, a referral or a warm introduction bypasses the language filters of a standard HR software.
My Advice?
Stop using "I don't speak Dutch" as an excuse for a stalled job search. Instead, focus on:
Targeting international-friendly companies.
Optimizing your CV to highlight results, not just tasks.
Activating your network to get through the "Windows."
